While it does happen that people receive defective batteries, there is no “battery problem” with the vast majority of iPods. The batteries are rated for 300-500 charge cycles, which is a full discharge and recharge of the battery. At this rate, the soonest that an iPod battery should fail to hold a charge is approximately 2-3 years.
